Yesterday was a great day. Right when school started we had P.E. outside. It was beautiful weather even though it was 8:00 in the morning and the next to last day of Oct. After we had a random cellphone, ipod, camera, all of the forbidden stuff at our school check, we began Mrs. Harris's class which is math and science. First let me tell you there are so few people at our school that all of us in high school are in the same classroom. Anyway, during the science part of the morning, the juniors who were doing chemistry were boiling water in a beaker on a ring stand over a burner on the table in the room. While we freshman were doing algebra or balancing equations, we heard a crash at the table where the lab was taking place.
Let me back up for a moment. Earlier that morning one of the girls kept asking the one boy in the class to kill this annoying fly that would not leave us alone. So here is where I will start again:
Apparently he smacked at the fly on the table (most likely trying to keep them quiet about the whole fly deal) but when he did so, the unstable ringstand fell over dropping the beaker that was on it and spilling the water that was beginning to boil. The water (maybe the hot beaker or the burner, I never figured that one out) touched one of the girls on her bare arm. When it did so she quickly (probably out of fright since she was sitting in front of it and felt it) scooted backwards slamming the door as she did so. (There might have even been a scream, I can't remember.) It all happened very quickly causing a lot of noise and chaos. I am surprised no one came running in. Anyway, everyone was all right and they began to clean it all up. They then started again, either on the same lab or a different one, while Mrs. Harris checked our balanced equations with us. I had noticed earlier, and I am sure other classmates did too, that the ringstand was quite wabbly. Soon after we heard another crash and a loud sizzling noise. We all looked over from the freshman table and saw that the ringstand had fallen again, but this time the water was really boiling and had spilled out onto the table and the chair and sounded like it was sizzling. What was weird was that none of the juniors were even touching the table. The ringstand, apparently, could not hold the beaker anymore, so just fell all by itself. They then just realized that the lab wasn't meant to be and began to clean up again. We all then recounted what had happened. As we were talking we realized there were many things we should be thankful about. Number one, when the first incident had happend and the girl had been touched with the boiling water, we realized that that could have been acid and she cold have been seriously injured. Secondly, when it all collapsed the second time, the same girl that had been touched with the boiling water was not in her same seat she had beeen in before (and not wearing her lab apron ), which if she would have been this time she would have been scalded with the boiling water which poured out over her previous seat. And thirdly, if it had been acid the second time it could have eaten away at the table and chairs (which is way not as important as if it would have done that to a person, but it would still have been bad). We freshman then got ready for our science lab, this time putting weights on the ringstand. Nothing went wrong that time, luckily, and when we were done all of us got granola bars and suckers because we were hungry and our stomachs were growling.
That is a simple example I made on the computer to show you what a ring stand is and such, so you can better understand the whole incident. Sorry it is so small, but if you click on the picture of it, it should enlarge.
Later that afternoon, we had history summaries, so all of us in high school (we all do the same history since there are so few of us) put our desks in a circle and had a little "discussion". Really it was for our summaries that were over the crusades. The funny thing about that was two of the boys (who were in a group) did their summaries which made us laugh, a lot. That is a whole other story in itself.
After school we had praise band practice which is always a lot of fun. Then Whitney drove us home from school in the truck, and we got ready for her big family birthday party. It was a lot of fun even though only two of our cousins could come out of 9 cousins and 1 "cousin-in-all"but like 2 live in England, 2 in Lexington, some had to practice for their concert tomorrow, etc. Some aunt and uncles came and Mime and Papaw, so it was still alot of fun. The five of us cousins (which is including Whitney, me , and our brother) jumped on the trampoline in the dark. The food and the cake were delicious which my brother cooked and baked. (He is only 11.) It was a lot of fun and we laughed a lot. After everyone left I soon fell asleep.
So those were the highlights of my Friday. Hope you had a great one too.

Jac! That was a good Friday! The whole day was fun (including our little run to Chelsey's house to get eggs), and to asnwer your question, yes, there was a scream bc I was in the other room w/ Brandi and David and we heard a scream and a door slam. So yeah, our day was quite eventful. And very very fun! :)
ReplyDeleteOh Yes, I forgot to mention our egg expedition. : )
